[Travelogue] A 5-Day Summer Road Trip in Okinawa

Preface
A spontaneous birthday trip with friends in the summer of 2026; the destination — Okinawa, a place none of us had been to before. Although we had visited Japan many times, we never went to Okinawa mainly because public transportation is inconvenient. Without self-driving, it’s almost impossible to explore Okinawa. Also, Okinawa’s culture feels more diverse and less traditionally Japanese.

Independent villa with easy parking at the entrance. Only four identical villas in the same block, spaced widely for good privacy. The interior is spacious with a living room, sofa, TV, and a fully equipped open kitchen. There is one room with two single beds, two rooms with double beds, two toilets for convenience, and only one bathroom. Additionally, there is a washing machine, large refrigerator, and air conditioning in every room. The downside is that it is very dark and quiet outside at night, the nearest convenience store is about a 5-minute drive away, and walking at night is difficult due to darkness. There are ants in the living room (a common issue in villas). Overall, considering the price, it’s quite good.

Walk out and head towards the BUS Station to the rental car company’s shuttle meeting point.
We waited here at 14–15 for the rental car company staff to pick us up.

The car rental lot is about 15 minutes from the airport.

Overall, the process is very fast, and there are Chinese-speaking staff at the counter, so there is no communication barrier.

There are many parking lots in this area, so you can find a spot by driving around; just be careful not to enter parking lots reserved for kei cars (yellow plates).
20:15 なかむら家 Nakamura-ya Dinner Izakaya (Cash Only)
Ranked third in this food experience.
It was late, so we just picked an izakaya near the parking lot to eat; unexpectedly, it was great—affordable prices and delicious food!
We ordered some tempura, rice balls, noodles, grilled skewers, and a dish similar to sweet and sour fish (delicious), along with beer and drinks. The total came to only ¥14,210 for 5 people.

At this time, most stores were closed, so we just browsed the drugstores and Donki.
Donki also has an Okinawan style. There are two Donki stores on Kokusai Street; we ate and parked near the smaller one. (The other one is larger)

Day 2 (7/17) — Diver’s Steak, Churaumi Aquarium, Coastal Café, Kokusai Street, Ryukyu Beef

The top food recommendation for this trip.
It takes about 1 hour and 15 minutes by car from the accommodation.
Okinawa mainly has one highway running from south to north.

Opens at 10:30, arrived at 10:50 but it was already full, and the parking lot was full too, had to park elsewhere nearby.
Continuing forward, there is a large FamilyMart parking lot where you can buy aquarium tickets and make some purchases.

Around 11:40, after the first group of customers finished eating, a seat became available.
The set includes bread, corn chowder, and a drink. The meat is thick but tender and juicy, with no sinew. Very delicious!
As for the surf and turf lobster, my friend said it was just okay and could get greasy easily.
The price is also very affordable compared to others.

The Icon of Churaumi Aquarium — Whale Shark
Continuing forward, you will reach the “Kuroshio Sea” aquarium tank (a huge tank with 7,500 m³).

Continuing forward, you can see the full view of the Kuroshio Sea giant aquarium, which is about three stories high. On B1, there is a café where you can enjoy close encounters with the ocean.
The Kuroshio Exploration is only available early or late in the day, allowing you to see whale sharks from above; feeding time is only at 15:30.

Mainly feeding other fish groups; you can see stingrays doing flips. Whale sharks are not very interested in this bait.

After exploring the main building, you can continue walking towards the sea, where there are dolphin shows, manatees, and sea turtles.
After taking the escalator down, there is a souvenir shop. The giant capsule toy machine that was popular on social media seems to have ended, as it was not seen.

Because we had a Ryukyu beef reservation on Kokusai Street in the evening, we only took a quick look at the sea turtles before heading back to Naha.

The entire trip takes about 2 hours.

Parking is available at the entrance. It is a building by the beach.
The outer side has café seating.
There is a swing on the beach where you can take photos, but at this time, the backlighting will make faces appear very dark.
When going down to the beach, be careful of the many hermit crabs underfoot. I have to admire Japan’s environmental protection. Although Okinawa is a popular tourist spot, the natural environment, including the snorkeling area we visited the next day, is still very well preserved and clean.
The food and drinks were ordinary. After a short break, we continued on our journey.

After exiting the highway, we took city roads. At this time, there were many cars, causing slight congestion.

We arrived around 20:15, parked at Kokusai Street, and took a stroll.
The menu and grilling instructions are explained in detail.
Some of us ordered 10 kinds, others ordered 14 kinds.
The variety is diverse but the portions are small, just enough to taste each type. The top right is Okinawa’s famous Agu pork (but still only one slice per person).
Overall, the service and ingredients were good, but the price was high and the portions were small.
Another drawback is that the dishes are served very slowly, and only in small portions at a time, making you feel sleepy while eating; also, different people’s meat is served together, so you need to ask which is which.

From 20:15 until nearly 22:30, we ate. Zzzz.
After leaving the city area at night in Okinawa, the streets are really dark with almost no streetlights. On the way back, we first stopped at a Lawson near our accommodation to buy some food. (Still not full)

Tomorrow morning we will go snorkeling. Besides buying breakfast in advance to eat well, also buy some salted candy to have on hand.
Day 3 (7/18) — Blue Cave Snorkeling, CAVE OKINAWA Stalactite Cave, American Village, Agu Pork
We booked the snorkeling for around 10:30 and needed to check in before 10:15.
Near the Blue Cave snorkeling area, only the Maeda Cape parking lot is available; no other private parking lots were researched.

The trip takes about one hour.
After Ishikawa, drive for about 15 more minutes to reach the parking lot.

Seeing this traffic jam was really stressful because we had to check in with the instructor before 10:15. There were at least 10 cars ahead before reaching the parking lot entrance, and we were worried about being late.

After parking, walk towards the exit (in the picture, the car exit is to the left; the area shown is all entrances). Find the coach’s license plate 75–18 to check in. (For meeting point details, please refer to the itinerary information. This refers to our information this time )
Parking Facilities
- There are toilets and public showers for changing clothes and rinsing (￥200/1 minute 40 seconds), lockers (￥100), but no towels or toiletries provided.
We wore our swimsuits before heading out, so we went straight to check in with the instructor. We left our belongings in the car and gave the car keys to the instructor for safekeeping.

Route:
When encountering a foreign coach, at least English is understood; the whole route is roughly as shown in the picture and not too far. If you get tired, the coach can help pull you back; just be careful of the coral reefs when getting in and out of the water.
The water is very clear, with many tropical fish.
The weather and water quality were both excellent.
The final stop is the Blue Cave, but we only snorkeled inside briefly to take photos and did not go deeper.
The sun is very strong and hot; it is recommended to wear a long-sleeve swimsuit.

Although there are many open spaces near the fishing port, parking is prohibited. You need to park at the nearby Maekaneku Fishing Port Parking Lot.
After diving, you’ll be very hungry. Almost everyone ordered two taco set meals plus drinks for ￥2,300.
The garlic shrimp was delicious, the second best dish we had on this trip.
The grilled beef was okay, not very tender.
13:25 After eating, head to CAVE OKINAWA Stalactite Cave
About a 10-minute drive.

The ticket booth is right next to the parking lot (free parking), but we had already purchased tickets online.
The route is roughly as shown in the image above. The overall scale is not very large. Some areas are under renovation or new buildings are being constructed, so the route may change in the future.
After ticket inspection, walk back and climb a small slope to find the entrance.
After entering, continue walking down to the cave entrance.
After entering, go straight to the end and watch the introductory video.
It feels similar to the previous experience of seeing Okayama Castle Lighting. Japanese lighting design always meets a certain standard.
Go back up the stairs to enter the cave (be careful of slippery floors and watch your head).
The outside temperature is about 30 degrees, while inside it is only 23.5 degrees, very cool.
There are also many beautiful light and shadow designs inside.
Finally, walk all the way up to exit the cave.
Overall, it’s not very large, the experience mainly involves seeing stalactites only. Next time, I’d like to visit the larger Gyokusendo Cave: Okinawa World Culture Kingdom (it’s actually near where we stayed, but we couldn’t fit it into our schedule).

After exiting the cave, walk a short distance uphill to find FOREST CAFE By CAVE OKINAWA.
Buy an ice cream to cool off in the summer. Once you exit the cave, it’s back to 30 degrees, very hot; they also sell some Okinawa color-changing cups here (they feel like paper cups) that people have recommended.

After leaving the café, walk up a short distance, then go down and turn a corner to return to the parking lot.

15:00 Depart, head to American Village
The drive takes about 30 minutes.
15:45 Arrive at American Village and park the car
There are many parking lots in American Village. At first, we wanted to park in the innermost lot but it was full, so we parked in an outer lot instead.
The central core area on the first floor has many shops to explore, while the second floor mainly features restaurants.

Walked to another souvenir shop on the other side. This one is very large, has everything, and there is a restroom on the second floor.
18:00 Aku’s Hideout Chatan Branch (Agu Pork Shabu-Shabu)
It’s about a 15-minute walk from American Village.
This small place, we made a reservation in advance. (There are also many Taiwanese visitors)
Yesterday, I only had one slice of Agu pork with the Ryukyu beef, which wasn’t enough, so today I made up for it.
The amount of vegetables provided was also generous.
19:40 Finished eating, head to Chatan Park and American Village for the 20:00 fireworks

The scale was small and the duration was short; plus, we went to the wrong place, so we only saw a little. The release was not at the beach near Chatan Park but on the seaside closer to American Village. The best viewing spot is at the Chatan Sunset Walk.

The American Village is brightly lit at night, and the night view is beautiful. However, we went diving early in the morning, and after dinner, we were very tired, so we just passed through and headed back to our accommodation.

Before heading back, we went to Lawson to buy some food and drinks. This was because of a limited edition black-and-white printed chip packaging released during the previous oil crisis and raw material shortages.

Day 4 (7/19) — Naminoue Shrine, Parco City, Churasun 6 Okinawa (ちゅらさん6) Gyaru Bar Show
In the past few days, we left early every day. Today, we can finally chill.
10:30 After a good sleep, head out to Naminoue Shrine

There happened to be a parking spot available right across from Naminoue Shrine, so we parked there directly.

Okinawa in July is very hot and sunny, with no shade along the way. After taking photos, we quickly left.
You can see that the beach is almost empty; approaching noon is too intense.
Later, I found out that you can actually go down from the other side of Naminoue Shrine, which is closer.
We took the red route and made a big loop.

About a 20-minute drive.

Park the car and start exploring! There is a large open lot and a whole parking tower, so no worries about finding a spot (free of charge).
Around noon, we first had a casual meal at a conveyor belt sushi restaurant on the 2nd floor. After eating, we had the energy to explore.

Tax Refund
All tax refunds are processed at the TAX FREE COUNTER on the first floor.
Parco City offers almost all kinds of brands for food, clothing, housing, transportation, education, and entertainment. On the first floor, there are also HANDS, Okinawa souvenir shops, and drugstores, so you can basically find everything here; besides that, there are many IP pop-up stores (there are others I didn’t photograph), so there are always new surprises every time you visit.
We stayed here for the entire afternoon.

This area is farther from the main tourist spots and the city center, and the environment feels more complex.

It was still early before the show at 20:30, so we grabbed a casual dinner nearby first.
First, buy a meal ticket from the vending machine and give it to the staff before taking a seat.
I ordered dipping noodles with a rich broth and tasty meat. The noodle portion was very large—I couldn’t finish a regular size.

Enter from Figure 1, go straight to the end, turn left, then go up to the 2nd floor to see the Churasun6 entrance sign. (The 1st floor is a nightclub, don’t go there by mistake)
Around 20:30, you can line up to wait for the staff to check your purchase voucher for ticket verification.
There are mainly two important notes:

Strictly No Touching: Dancers will come down to interact with the audience. Besides high-fives and photos, no other physical contact is allowed.

Tips: You can buy vouchers directly from any staff member with cash. Each voucher is ￥100, and the minimum purchase is 10 vouchers for ￥1,000. To give a tip, wait for the dancer to lift the bikini strap before slipping it in.
Upon entry, a designated dancer will guide you to your seat and you will receive a complimentary drink (alcoholic or non-alcoholic). Personally, I think this is just right, and there’s no need to buy an all-you-can-drink package as it doesn’t add much value.
Before the show starts, dancers will come down to mingle, chat with everyone, invite you to follow their IG, and give high-fives.
We bought front row seats; the “shocking” and “super shocking” seats are the very front row by the stage.
20:30 Show Start
The performance was very exciting and joyful, with outstanding stage design and music—there was never a dull moment. Since most of the audience were Taiwanese tourists, the final part even included a rendition of Jolin Tsai’s “Practice Dance Skills” along with dragon and lion dances.
Worth experiencing!

A few days ago, we went to another smaller place in a different direction; this one is bigger and busier, so we parked directly in the lot across the street.
The outdoor TV wall shows an advertisement for Churasun 6, a hostess bar.

The duty-free counter on the 4th floor had a long queue all around, packed with people; since I had already bought enough yesterday, I didn’t buy anything more. However, my friend said that although the line was long, it moved quickly.
We didn’t plan to buy anything from Don Quijote, so we just strolled around Kokusai Street casually.
There is also another specialty store here selling Jiikawa Shisa, but the products are quite similar.
Later, when we got tired from walking, we went to McDonald’s to eat while waiting for the other friends to finish shopping.

On the last night in Okinawa, of course, we had to eat and drink.
Day 5 (7/20): Outlet, Return to Taipei

No plans today, so I tried playing pachinko in the morning.
The sound and light effects are impressive, designed to overwhelm your senses and keep you playing; I spent about ￥3,000 trying it out, didn’t win, and called it a day.
You can play by directly inserting coins in the top left corner. The basic rule is to check the payout rate and jackpot probability, choose a few machines, start playing from the left side, and after accumulating to a certain point, trigger the right side to begin accumulating rewards/payouts.
If you win and don’t want to keep the prize, first go to the counter to exchange it for a prize ticket, then take it to a nearby prize exchange center to convert it into cash.
We left around 11:30 and headed to Senaga Island.

You can directly see planes taking off and landing at Naha Airport here. It’s very sunny at this time.
Originally wanted to eat at the café here, but there were no seats and it was too hot, so just took some photos and left.
12:15 Okinawa Soba Soba-dokoro Tamaya Toyosaki Branch
About a 15-minute drive from Senagajima, with a free parking lot nearby.
First, buy a meal ticket and give it to the staff before taking a seat.
I personally think it suits Taiwanese tastes well. The braised pork is tender, paired with the chewy Okinawa noodles and Japanese-style broth. I find it quite delicious. (I’m not a fan of Taiwanese braised pork noodles that are too salty.)

After eating, we went to the nearby last outlet shopping spot to browse around.
The outdoor outlet is very sunny, and there is also a drugstore on the second floor.
13:45 Blue Seal Toyosaki
Too full to eat more, so we just took a short walk and went to Blue Seal across the street for ice cream. Haven’t tried it yet during our stay (Okinawa brand).

14:40 Return the car at FLIGHT RENTACAR
Highly recommend this car rental company. Although it’s not at the airport, they offer free and comfortable shuttle service; the rental and return process is quick, and the staff are friendly and speak Chinese.

Finally, take a stroll around. This shopping street has everything: souvenir shops, Muji, drugstores, and more.

There are still many souvenir shops available for last-minute purchases after departure.
There are also some food options available.
Bought some hot food to eat right away.

Finally, I brought back a bottle of fresh cola, which I never got to see during this trip, to drink in Taiwan.
